more ignorant than Abu Lahab

Four Principles #5: More Ignorant of Tawheed than Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl!

The Author (may Allaah have mercy on him) says:

First Principle

You should know that the disbelievers whom the messenger of Allaah (commendations and peace of Allaah be upon him) fought acknowledged that Allaah is the Creator and Disposer of affairs but that did not admit them into Islam.

The evidence (for that) is His statement exalted is He:

Say (O Muhammad): “Who provides for you from the sky and from the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes the affairs?” They will say: “Allaah” Say: “Will you not then be afraid of Allaah’s Punishment (for setting up rivals in worship with Allaah)?”

Surah Yunus: 31

more ignorant than Abu Lahab

Commentary

Sheikh AbdulAzeez Ibn Baaz said:

“The first principle: is that you should know that the polytheists whom the messenger (commendations and peace of Allaah be upon him) and the companions fought affirmed tawheed of Lordship for Allaah; that Alllaah is their creator, provider and disposer of their affairs, and they did not have any doubt about this. But the ignorant Muslims today think that this form of tawheed is sufficient, and this is a result of ignorance, because the polytheists now know better than them. If one of them affirms (tawheed of) Lordship and says: Allaah is my Lord, my creator and my provider indeed that does not suffice him.”

Explanation of the Sheikh’s evidence

The Sheikh supported his point with a verse of the Quran. That is because it is obligatory upon the believer to take his creed from the Quran and sunnah. Anyone who takes his creed from elsewhere has taken a share of misguidance even if such a creed coincides with the truth. The Muslim must know the evidence for any aspect of his creed in the Quran and/or the Sunnah before knotting it in his heart. If he forgets the evidence afterwards then he has no sin but taking in a creed before knowing the evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah is misguidance. We ask Allaah for safety.

Note that the Sheikh only mentioned one verse because his book was meant to be a treatise else there are many verses of the Quran that support this principle as you will come to see in the later parts of this article in shaa Allaah.

So he (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Say (O Muhammad): “Who provides for you from the sky and from the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes the affairs?” They will say: “Allaah” Say: “Will you not then be afraid of Allaah’s Punishment (for setting up rivals in worship with Allaah)?”

Surah Yunus: 31

Say (O Muhammad): “Who provides for you from the sky with rain and from the earth? with plants.

Or who owns hearing and sight? and gave you both

And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living?: meaning he brings out the living from zygote and brings out zygote from the living.

They will say: “Allaah” is the one that does all the above”[1]

Sheikh AbdulAzeez Ibn Baaz commented on the verse saying:

“Since you know this will you not avoid associating partners with Allaah and return to the true tawheed.”

Some other evidences from the Quran

As we mentioned earlier, there are many verses of the Quran that support this great principle and we will pour some of them out in the lines to follow.

You might ask or think: why do we need to know  many verses to support just one point or is one verse of the Quran not sufficient for the believer? We say (and Allaah alone is our source of support): Yes one verse suffices but it is important to mention more because:

  1. Allaah himself mentioned several verses and He is the All-Wise so it is only wise for us to follow His guidance.
  2. The abundance of evidence for a single matter shows that it is a clear matter and no true Muslim should dispute it.
  3. Having many proofs also shows that it is a very important matter and we should treat it as such. And Allaah is exalted above vain speech
  4. Each verse explains the matter in unique ways, this makes it easier for the us to comprehend
  5. A repeated matter is more likely to stick in the heart, this increases the belief of the Muslim and keeps his heart firm

And many other reasons which Allaah knows best of.

So here they are

If you were to ask them: “Who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon?” They will surely reply: “Allaah.” How then are they deviating (as polytheists and disbelievers)?

Ankaboot: 61

If you were to ask them: “Who sends down water (rain) from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death?” They will surely reply: “Allaah.” Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allaah!” Nay! Most of them have no sense.

Ankaboot: 63

And if you (O Muhammad) ask them: “Who has created the heavens and the earth,” they will certainly say: “Allaah.” Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allaah!” But most of them know not.

Luqman:25

And verily, if you ask them: “Who created the heavens and the earth?” Surely, they will say: “Allaah (has created them).” Say: “Tell me then, the things that you invoke besides Allaah, if Allaah intended some harm for me, could they remove His harm, or if He (Allaah) intended some mercy for me, could they withhold His Mercy?” Say : “Sufficient for me is Allaah; in Him those who trust (i.e. believers) must put their trust.”

Az-Zumar: 38

And indeed if you ask them, “Who has created the heavens and the earth?” They will surely say: “The All-Mighty, the All-Knower created them.”

Az-Zukhruf: 9

And if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: “Allaah”. How then are they turned away (from the worship of Allaah, Who created them)?

Az-Zukhruf: 87

Atheism Is Arrogance and Nothing But A Lie

So nobody ever believed that no one created the worlds. Not even the fire worshipers who claimed that there were two gods; god of good and god of evil, in the end they give supremacy to the god of good. So the belief in one Lord is a part of our instinct.

Anyone who denies the existence of one Supreme Creator is only saying it out of arrogance including the great tyrant Fir’aun (Pharaoh). Fir’aun knew in his heart that he was nothing but a mere human and His Creator was above the heavens but he said he was God out of arrogance. Allaah the exalted said (interpretation of the meaning):

And they belied them (those Ayât) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their ownselves were convinced thereof [i.e. those (Ayât) are from Allaah, and Mûsa (Moses) is the Messenger of God in truth, but they disliked to obey Mûsa (Moses), and hated to believe in his Message of Monotheism]. So see what was the end of the Mufsidûn (disbelievers, disobedient to God, evil-doers, liars.).

Let’s Correct this Great Error in Understanding Tawheed

Sheikh Solih bn Fawzaan said:

“So tawheed is not (only) the affirmation of lordship as the scholars of philosophy and those who study their creed say. They say that tawheed is to affirm that Allaah is the creator, provider, giver of life and taker of life, one in His attributes there is none like Him, one in His actions, no partner for him” But this is tawheed roboobiyyah. Go to any of the books of the scholars of philosophy, you will discover that they do not go beyond tawheed of lordship but this is not the tawheed that Allaah sent the messengers with and affirming this alone will not benefit a person because the polytheists and the stark disbelievers affirmed this but it did not take them out of disbelief and it did not admit them into Islam. So this is a great error and whosoever has this creed has not improved on the belief of Abu Jahl and Abu Lahab. Therefore, what some of the enlightened people are upon today is tawheed of Lordship only and they do not discuss tawheed of (Uloohiyyah) divinity, and this is a great error regarding the meaning of tawheed.”

As for shirk (polytheism and associating partners with Allaah) they say: “it is for you to believe that someone else creates other than Allaah or someone else provides other than Allaah”. We say: this is what Abu Jahl and Abu Lahab said. They did not say: Someone else creates other than Allaah and provides other than Allaah rather they acknowledged that Allaah is the creator, provider, giver of life and taker of life.

So what is Tawheed

Sheikh Ibn Baaz said:

“Tawheed is: to direct worship to Allaah alone, and believe that He alone has right to it and none else.”

In shaa Allaah in the second principle we will mention the bone of contention and line of difference between the Muslim and disbeliever. We beseech Allaah to make it easy.
